tapwater.org – Creating local water points, for free water on the go!

I’ve just found this website. What a great idea and so good for the environment! Here’s what they say:

tapwater.org – Creating local water points, for free water on the go!.

tapwater.org is a not for profit organisation promoting the drinking of tap water in the UK. Our aim is to reduce the use of expensive and environmentally damaging bottled waters, by making it easy and convenient for you to access free tap water wherever you are. We are working towards a refilling station every 400 metres in urban areas.

It’s easy to get tap water when you’re at home, just turn on the tap, but what about when you are out and about? That’s where our map comes in. We are mapping points all around the UK making it convenient for you to fill up your reusable bottle with tap water, for free. Take a look at the map here or by using our iPhone app. You can also locate refilling stations by looking out for our blue ‘refill here’ sticker in participating shop windows.

We have also teamed up with other similar organisations to create a world-wide network of refilling points (including Blue W in Canada, Tap It in America, De Dopper, jointhepipe and We Tap Water in Holland) so now you can fill up whilst on holiday too.

Refilling stations are cafes, restaurants, pubs, or anyone who can provide public access tap water for refilling reusable bottles. The owners of these businesses are providing this service for free and we are encouraging our users to support them. To use a refilling point you just need your own reusable bottle, of which there are many available on the market. You don’t have to use one of our lifebottles but by buying one you would be helping us expand our network.

Our lifebottle is a high quality, stainless steel, re-useable bottle, which we have designed to be both stylish and durable. The unique and innovative cap contains a special compartment for the storage of our effervescent flavoured tablets (taptabs) so you can add flavour to your water for only 9p a go. The bottle is also vacuum constructed, keeping water cold for up to 20 hours.

All profits from the sales of our bottles will be used to; raise awareness of the damaging effects of bottled waters on our environment; expand our network of refilling stations;and provide mains fed water machines for educational establishments. These machines will supply refreshing chilled tap water for free, proving tap water can taste just as good as bottled!

Britain’s first ever gold medallist

Sunday 21st August. Yet more rain! Apart from earlier in the year, we don’t seem as if we have had much of a summer here in the UK. Every time I get my bike out it starts raining. This weekend was no different, but the sun did come out on Sunday afternoon, which allowed us to get on our bikes for a short, but enjoyable ride.

As usual I took my small pocket camera with me, in the hope of seeing a picture. I always like to take at least one reasonable shot that can be added to my ever expanding picture library.

Whilst cycling through the village of Shapwick (which is situated alongside the River Stour), we noticed a sign by the local recreation field, which gave information about a local man (Charles Bennett) who was

in a track and field event. He won his gold medal at the 1900 Paris Olympics with a record breaking 1500m run in 4 minutes 6.2 seconds. Its good to know that a world class Olympian can come out of a small village like Shapwick in Dorset.

A cycle around Dorset country lanes

Yesterday saw my wife, Chris, and I on a bike ride just a few miles north of where we live. We cycled along some very quiet country lanes and passed through some typical Dorset villages such as Witchampton, Wimborne St Giles, Edmondsham, Horton and Holt. Lunch was munched in the centre of Wimborne St Giles, sat underneath the very decorative village sign. After lunch, we wandered into the beautifully ornate historical village church. The village has been designated a conservation and has some interesting alms houses which were built in 1624. It still surprises me that, when travelling slowly by bike, one can still find ‘little gems’ on one’s own doorstep!
